ABOUT
AMOULA THE DOULA
I was born and raised in Jordan, but my ancestral roots stem from Syria, Palestine and Jordan. Arabic is my native language. My paternal grandparents fled Palestine in 1948 and my maternal grandfather, left Syria when the French took control after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Each of my grandparents and their history shaped me in becoming who I am today, I often reflect on my own experiences whenever they remind me of a journey they took. But, it is my maternal grandmother, Fadda (Fa-Dha), who was born and raised in the Northern part of the Jordan Valley, that I found to be the inspiration for my practice. She was a Bedouin mother with traditional tattoos on her chin, giving birth to 13 children under basic conditions. She was the first person I thought of after my birth, wishing I could share my story with her, and ask her about her story with each pregnancy and birth, and I really just want to tell her how strong I thought she was.Â
Even though I studied Interior Design, my first job was a Graphic Designer at a military organization. From there I made my way through marketing and advertising, which later landed me a job that introduced me to my own hidden skills and I started running operations for different types of events, art fairs, concerts, and festivals. I worked in different fields, arts, journalism, youth empowerment, tourism, and now reproductive justice!
Throughout my practice and my doula journey, I aim to draw inspiration from the traditional, and tribal ways of my ancestors and learn more about how the community supported pregnant people and their families throughout their pre and post-natal journeys.
I took a selfie with my bump at 41 weeks pregnant with my first, IVF pregnancy. I was induced that night, and delivered my baby the next day weighing 9lbs 3oz. This birth was traumatic and I am still working through it.
Picture taken 7 minutes after delivering my second baby at 38 weeks and 5 days. Fast labor and delivery, I was already dilated 6cm when I arrived at the hospital, not too long after I gave birth to my 10lbs 1.6oz baby with a very bruised face because they were so low in my pelvis for all the third trimester.
